Maybe you’ve gone to the gym faithfully, followed your diet meticulously and you still have a few stubborn areas of fat that won’t come off. You’ve decided you’re tired of living with the unwanted bulges and have thought about maybe paying a plastic surgeon to make them go away. If you’re in that position, you should know about three options for fat reduction. These are not the only options available, but they are choices to consider:
A New Treatment: Zeltiq
Zeltiq is a new treatment that has been getting quite a bit of buzz in the media lately because it allows doctors to freeze fat cells, which causes them to leave the body. The treatment is not FDA-approved yet for getting rid of fat, but some doctors are making the treatment available on a limited basis. Patients who have gotten it done so far have used it to freeze fat on their stomachs and hip areas.
The Standard Treatment: Liposuction
Many people seem to want alternatives to liposuction, but liposuction has been around for a long time, and has become the standard treatment for people seeking cosmetic surgery to get rid of unwanted fat. If the surgeon is good and has a lot of experience doing liposuction, it can be a good and relatively safe option. (Every cosmetic procedure has risks, though, so be careful.) One of the good things about liposuction is that the surgeon can target it to just about any area — from a wattle under the chin to pouches of excess fat on the knees.
Another Possibility: Thermage
Thermage is a treatment that has been around for several years that uses radiofrequency to tighten skin on different parts of the body. (It can be used on almost any area of the body.) It is used for skin tightening, and it also can remove some extra fat, though you probably won’t see the results you would see with liposuction. Thermage requires several treatments to see results.
If you are thinking about getting any of these treatments, make sure you do a lot of research ahead of time, and talk to a qualified plastic surgeon to see if any of the procedures are right for you.
