Monday, February 28th, 2011

It’s a sad truth that some people still do not really understand how important it is to have cars insured especially in states where car insurance is not mandatory. Some of them only think that it is an additional burden on their finances because it can be very expensive and getting cheap car insurance is not easy, so why bother? Others take it as a mere compliance because it is required by their state laws and if they are caught without it, they will be in trouble for violating a law. I guess it is about time that people should be well – informed that whether or not car insurance is required by law, it is even more beneficial than a drivers license because it will keep you safe and protected when you are driving your car or somebody else’s car in times of accidents.

It is also known as temporary car coverage because it can only be used for a short period of time contrary to annual policies. However, its short term feature is what has made it more affordable. It will allow anyone to make daily payments or monthly installments on their temporary policy depending on which payment procedure they prefer most convenient. But either way, they can be sure that the fees will be cheaper and you cannot make excuses that you cannot afford to have one.
In addition, despite its cheap cost, temporary car cover provides for a wide array of advantages over long term policies. The advantages are; equal protection while paying less with a short term policy; driver no longer has to pay for an expensive annual fee for a short term use of car; and adding multiple drivers is possible without spending much.

Hives And Eye Allergies

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Hives

The answer to the question how long do hives last is not a simple one. Some hives last for a few minutes while others can take weeks to go away. Hives can also go away, only to show up on a different part of your body. Mild hives will go away without any treatment at all. In other cases, an antihistamine will be the suggested treatment. Corticosteroids are a common prescription in more aggressive cases. Epinephrine shots may be the treatment when hives are life threatening.

Controlling hives caused by allergies will require blood work to find the cause. Other causes may be perspiration, clothing that is too snug, elements in jeweler, and even stress.
Your doctor will be able to help you find the triggers that cause the discomfort of hives. Your physician should see any hives that are severe, or take a long time to go away.

Eye Allergy Tips

The eye allergy tips begin with paying strict attention to your eyes. If an eye allergy goes unnoticed or not taken seriously, you could end up with problems that require a doctors care. Streptococci are one of the most common causes of conjunctivitis. Redness, a yellow or green discharge, eye pain, and swelling are some of the symptoms. Any discharge that causes the eyelids to stick together will be treated with a warm face cloth, and an antibiotic prescription.

Many fear eye drops, so ask your doctor for a recommendation on how to administer drops to cause the least discomfort and fear.
Never reuse a prescription from a previous infection. Each case has to be reviewed and a new prescription ordered.
Eye allergies are quite difficult to avoid, because many are air born. The same things that trigger asthma or hay fever will likely be the same things that cause eye allergies.

Glucose Levels And Test Results

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Nothing can make a person feel worse than doing poorly on a test and when that test is a blood test as part of a yearly physical there is indeed reason to feel poorly. More than likely those poor test results include elevated glucose levels, elevated cholesterol levels and the final in the trifecta, high triglycerides. When this happens, it’s time, as with all poor test results, to look in the mirror and decide to do the work need to turn those test results around and score better on the next one. This was true of the algebra tests in school and the philosophy tests in college and now it is just as true about the tests later in life that predict your future health.

The way to turn those results around involves changing eating habits and getting out of a sitting position once in a while and getting moving. Those two combined, if done intelligently, can do wonders in improving those blood test results. In large part the elevated glucose levels are the result of that poor diet and lack of exercise. Glucose is indeed necessary to keep our bodies functioning at proper levels, but they need now where near the amounts we feed them every day. The same is true of exercise. Our bodies were designed for movement and depriving them of that essential task creates breakdowns in other areas.

Eating foods low in processed sugar, but high in fiber and complex carbohydrates is a first change to make. Not surprising this describes most fruits and vegetables and adding more to the diet and removing processed foods and desserts will help the return to normal blood sugar levels. Exercise is the other part and more exercise will help burn excess glucose and leave less circulating in the blood stream. Over the months pounds will drop away, movement will get easier and the results
from that next test will be exemplary.

All About Herniated Disc Treatment

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

If you suffer from a herniated disc problem and often experience back pains, the best way to get rid of it is to educate yourself about the different treatment options available to you. By becoming familiar with your condition and carefully studying various alternatives for treatment, you will be able to choose the most suitable one for you.

Although anxiety and stress are not triggers of back pain, they can definitely make your symptoms worse. They can damage your health and have an impact on the ability of your body to regulate itself. This is why you should aim to reduce your anxiety and stress levels.

A herniated disc is one of the common causes of back pain. It is when a disc bulges out of the spinal cord, causing an unnatural alignment. This often causes pain in the lower back which shoots down to the legs and feet. It can also spread to the buttocks and cause a tingling and numbing sensation on the legs.

A herniated disc can usually be treated with non-surgical procedures, which is recommended especially if the patient is in good health. Some of these treatments are electrical stimulation, pain medications, hydrotherapy exercises and therapy using spinal decompression machines. Spinal decompression machines in fact, are the latest technological breakthrough in treating herniated disc problems. These methods often show satisfactory results and typically improve the patient’s condition in a short amount of time.

However, if the pain continues to persist and worsens after six to eight weeks, then the patient might opt to go for a herniated disc surgery. The doctor usually diagnoses the patient’s condition and health first before recommending a herniated disc surgery treatment. While some people experience no more pain and symptoms after surgery, this treatment might not be suitable for all types of patients. It all depends on the severity of their herniated disc problem, as well as their general health condition.

Secrets On How To Overcome Constant Headaches

There are a number of ways you can adopt as solutions to your constant headaches; read on to find out a little more on how to get rid of them.

Eliminate regular stresses in your life. Stress is at the very center of most of the reported cases of people experiencing constant headaches. Now, take time to observe your thoughts and try to take note of thoughts that normally make you feel awful. With that done you have to come to the realization that these constant thoughts are the ultimate cause of the regular pain in your head. Sit back in peaceful surroundings and make a list of all the good things that have come into your life. Breathe in huge chunks of air as you think of such thoughts. With that done, you should then exhale while thinking of all the bad things that are happening in your life for effective headache relief.

Eat healthier. One listed cause of headaches is an improper diet that is plagued with all the ills that could have a vegetarian contemplating suicide. Refrain from eating out, drinking alcohol and coffee and if you smoke it will be worth your while to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke. As a form of replacement therapy you can prescribe to a diet jam-packed with lots of vegetables, fruits, water and fresh orange juice.

Relax a little from pressures from work and try to fall into your own zone. By own zone I mean immerse yourself in all the things you love doing, be it cycling, watching television, reading books or taking leisurely walks on the beach. It is highly possible that most of your head aches are caused by marginalizing the things you love and focusing on the things you do not really enjoy, like work.  Proper stress management is vital to maintaining good health.

Ways To Treat Tennis Elbow And Golfers Elbow

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis) are similar in many respects. Both of these conditions are injuries that result from the overuse of the tendinopathies and are often associated with the game of tennis and golf respectively, thus the names. However, these conditions do not affect tennis player and golfers only, anyone who uses the arm in activities that require repeated movements while gripping an object, swinging motions, repeated extending and folding the arm or twisting it is susceptible to this injury. On physical examination of an elbow with either of these conditions, it will be noted that the tissues or the tendons are inflamed and sometimes swollen and the pain is a result of them resisting motion.

These injuries are brought about by improper use of the arm, use of improper techniques in sports or failing to detect or look out for the initial symptoms of the tendon injuries. These symptoms often include tenderness and tingly sensation on the injured area, numbness that may spread as far as the wrist and the fingers, pain when folding or stretching the arm and difficulty in coordinating the movements of the arm especially the wrist and the fingers. More pronounced symptoms include pain, inability to stretch or fold the arm, difficulty in using the arm even in light tasks like writing and lifting a cup of tea among others.

Treatments for lateral and medial epicondylitis injuries

There are different ways to treat this condition depending on the severity of the injury. Here are the recommended remedies.

The use of R.I.C.E. technique. These stand for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This basically means letting the injured arm to rest in order to prevent severing the already torn tendons, applying cold therapy to make the arm more comfortable, reduce pain and prevent or alleviate swelling and inflammation. Compression is beneficial to healing in that it brings the tissues close to speed up healing.

Elevation means keeping the injured elbow supported by a tennis elbow brace to prevent accumulation of blood on the region and protect the arm from accidents and unintentional use.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and painkillers may be used to make the pain and other symptoms more tolerable. These medications, particularly the anti-inflammation medication, may be applied superficially or taken orally but if it does not work, a doctor may inject cortisone to the injured tendons. Eventually the symptoms of tennis elbow will subside and healing will begin.

The Importance of Furnace Filters to Asthma Sufferers

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The most significant issue that asthma patients suffer from is exposure to allergens in the air that they breath. If you suffer from asthma it is a good idea to evaluate the air quality in your home and take steps to improve it. A good idea for improving your home’s air quality is to change your standard furnace filter to an allergy furnace filter. Allergy furnace filters are a specialized type of filter that are capable of removing more than 90% of allergens in the air. The standard disposable fiberglass filters are meant for keeping large particles of dust out of your filter. They do not do a good job at filtering out the minute particles that circulate in your home. Allergy furnace filters however were designed to both protect your furnace and filter microscopic allergens out of the air your breath. To this end, the most relied upon type of allergy filter is the HEPA allergy furnace filter.

HEPA furnace air filters must be capable of trapping 99.9% of allergens in the air you breath. This is the standard that makes them so highly regarded. HEPA filters are no different then other filters in that they need to be maintained in order to work efficiently. This includes checking and cleaning your filter regularly. A dirty filter will not only harm the air that you breath but it will make your furnace have to work harder to push air through the clogged holes and as a result your furnace will work much less efficiently and your energy bills will climb.

HEPA filters are made out of several layers of fibers which is what makes their filtering capability so effective. Due to the fact that the filter uses fibers that are so highly dense your furnace must be strong enough to maintain a powerful airflow that can go through the filter.

Cooking with Buffalo Meat

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

A new trend in cooking is becoming more popular everyday in average people’s kitchens; cooking with buffalo meat and other less traditional cuts of game. There are several reasons to make the switch to game, even where more traditional cuts are available. The first reason is that on average, cut for cut buffalo is healthier for you than traditional meats. There is less calories, fat, and bad cholesterol in buffalo than in beef, chicken, pork, and even lamb. This means that you can simply switch to buffalo and eat healthier. The best part is that you do not even have to go hunting in order to get your meat; you can purchase farm raised buffalo either online or in a specialty butcher shop or grocery store.

Less Fat in Buffalo Meat – Packed with Protein

Lots of people are worried that cooking with buffalo meat is somehow harder or incredibly different than with regular beef. The truth couldn’t be farther from the myth. The only difference in cooking with buffalo is that because of the lower fat content it will cook faster. This also means that cooking it to medium well or well done can leave it drier than a regular cut of meat. The solution to this problem is to simply cook your buffalo steaks or cuts at a lower temperature, or even in a marinade to make sure that they stay nice and juicy. Less tender cuts are great to cook in a crock pot in water and for several hours; this helps the meat to soak up plenty of water and be extremely tasty.

The other main difference is that buffalo tends to be sweeter than regular cuts, again because of the lower fat content. Buffalo is becoming more common every day, and is a great way to start eating healthier. If you’re itching to try something new and a touch exotic, there is no better way to begin than with a nice buffalo steak.

Lower Triglycerides: The Natural Way

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

By definition, triglyceride is an ester that consists of a glycerol combined to three fatty acids. It is the chief component of animal fats and vegetable oil, and makes up the majority of fats ingested by humans. Unfortunately, triglyceride is hailed to be the culprit in most cases of stroke and heart diseases, and not just high LDL levels. Due to this, many ways and techniques have been devised to lower triglycerides – but the safest way still is to have a proper and healthy diet rich in components that promote healthy triglyceride level.

One of prime example of a healthy food that effectively lowers a person’s triglyceride count is cold water fish. Studies have shown that eating cold water fish for at least three times in a week reduces anyone’s triglycerides significantly. In addition to that, the DHA, EPA and DPA fatty acids inherent in fatty fish such as salmon do not only reduces triglycerides but also cut the risk of sudden cardiac attacks and stroke by over 44%, according to the American Heart Association (AHA).  Omega 3 fish oil also helps stabilize irregular heartbeat, decreases tendencies of artery hardening and blood clotting, decreases the overall cholesterol level, and naturally lowers blood pressure.

You can also add healthy food items that are high in protein in your diet. In addition, you should be picky when it comes to fat. Avoid trans and saturated fats since they are bad fats that can increase the body’s LDL cholesterol. Instead, go for the polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats that are known to improve HDL levels. Also, get a load of food items high in fiber, fruits and vegetables since they significantly lower triglycerides in most cases. You might also want to cut down your calorie intake to achieve not only a better triglyceride count, but also a healthy weight in the long run. Low glycemic diet also helps, as well as staying away from sugar-filled edibles such as cakes, ice cream, chocolates and all those things that the sweet tooth craves for.

Aside from the natural, healthy diet, there are also some other things you can try to lower triglycerides, and one of them is having an active lifestyle. Make sure you do some exercise a day, but remember that what is really important is the duration of the exercise and not the intensity. If you are not really an active person, you can start by trying small activities you do not normally do everyday – say for example, taking the stairs instead of the elevator when you are just five floors or less away. Walking briskly is also another way, and if the place you are bound for is within walking distance, ditch the car. That is why it is called ‘walking distance.’ More importantly, quit smoking. This is quite difficult for those who are really into smoking, but quitting smoking can positively affect anyone’s overall cholesterol level.

If You Want to Be Healthy, Learn to Cook!

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

In life just about everything is a trade off.  If you want fast food, the trade off is that most of the time you are going to be getting a lot of unnecessary junk.  Preservatives that may or may not be toxic and unhealthy fats are the norm when it comes to convenience food.  The reality is that the harmful effects of these foods do build up in our bodies.  That is why if you are seriously committed to your long term health, one of the best things that you can do for yourself is learn how to cook.  Not only will you be healthier, but you will end up saving a fortune in your food expenses.

It does not have to be complicated, but you should try to focus on making healthy fare.  (Sorry – your skill at making nachos is not going to help you here.)  Stick to lean proteins, vegetables and low glycemic carbohydrates.  The best thing to do is shop around the exterior of the grocery store where there are far fewer packaged foods.  Stay away from anything in boxes because unless it is USDA certified organic, chances are it is loaded with unhealthy preservatives.  Instead, choose fresh whole clean foods.

You may even want to try a few foods that you have never tried before.  For example, in the last few years many people have learned how to cook quinoa and are much healthier for it.  Don’t forget snacks because research has shown that eating more frequently can help to speed up your metabolism.  Non-fat Greek yogurt is a great snack to have on hand for those times when you do not feel like preparing something.  Hummus recipes are great to make because they are low in unhealthy fats and high in protein and fiber.  The combination can really keep you full throughout the day.

Smoothies for a Quick Morning Exit

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Smoothies area a great way to start the day and are quick and easy with the help of a smoothie maker. Add some seasonal fruit, ice cubes, and yogurt and blend together for a healthy meal with vitamins, minerals, and few calories. These tasty drinks also help you get in your recommended daily fruit servings. Smoothies are similar to milkshakes but without all the added fat and calories from ice cream.

Smoothies are now available at many restaurants, drive-up windows, and cafes. Instead of filling up on empty calories for meals and snacks, try treating yourself to a nutritious smoothie. To complete the nutrient punch, add protein powder for a completely balanced meal. They are also easy to get when you are on the go.

The popularity of these tasty beverages has even prompted fast food restaurants to offer them on their menus. While it is fast and easy to just swing through and buy one, it is more cost effective to make your smoothies at home. Plus, you will know what ingredients are being blended together and can customize your drink. For variety, test out different fruit combinations or even add some vegetables to the mix. Pick your favorite sweetener such as sugar or honey, blend all of the ingredients, and take your perfect smoothie on the road with you.

When you want a different kind of drink, try making iced coffee at home. The evening before, make some espresso or very strong coffee and let it cool in the refrigerator. The next morning, put an equal amount of coffee and ice in a blender, and add some condensed milk and sweetener to taste. Experiment with different coffee flavors, and you will never want to pay the high coffee house prices again.

Most people can get by with a regular blender to make smoothies, but a smoothie connoisseur prefers an actual smoothie maker. They are better at pulling the ingredients down and mix them more thoroughly. Plus, the motors have more power and are less likely to burn out with thicker mixes. Many also come with a lever on the bottom you can turn to pour the smoothie out, preventing messes.

The Dangers of Mold and Mildew

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

People ask all kinds of random questions about mold and mildew, and -how it affects their health. They often wonder if mold and mildew is dangerous, and if mold and mildew removal really works. The fact is some removal products does work, and mildew and mold both is hazardous to your health.

Mildew and mold both can cause allergies, especially to those who have allergy problems. Mold grows on surfaces, e.g. wood and causes discoloration. Mildew is a fungal disease from plants in which parasitic fungus when visible appears in gray and white powdery deposits on the surfaces, and grows on leaves or fruits.

Mold is caused from flooding, leaky roofs, humidifiers, damp basements, damp crawl spaces, constant plumbing leaks, clothes dryers, and vented doors. Mold needs a source of moisture to continue growing, and needs food from wood, dirt, or leaves.

Mold is a small organism, which appear in various colors including black, green, orange, white, brown, etc. Mold produces mold spores, which travel in the area. The most dangerous mold is black mold because it produces toxins, which are sent through the air.

Every day we are exposed to mold. We may touch mold, eat, or breathe it in to our lungs. Once mold begins to grow on surfaces, the spores release into the air, which we inhale. If a person inhales a large amount of spores, it is ingested, and may cause health problems.

Someone allergic to mold may develop allergy symptoms, such as runny nose, watery eyes, headaches, difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, itching, nasal congestion, sneezing, etc. Symptoms that emerge from allergies caused by mold effects us all differently.

If mold spores are present in large numbers, it may cause allergy reactions, skin irritation, infections, respiratory problems, and asthma attacks. Mold in high volume can damage the home structure, and when exposed in large volumes, can cause a person to develop allergies.

Mold and mildew removal does work, but one has to clean the area properly to enforce the removal’s properties to remove mold and mildew.
