Jaw Popping Pain

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

You’ve probably got sick of that jaw popping noise happening by now and you’ve decided to do something about it. Well done! Sometimes jaw problems like these will go away by themselves, but they can also get worse if not treated, so let’s go ahead and see if we can fix that annoying sound.

Firstly, it’s important to understand what’s causing the jaw popping. There are a lot of different causes, the most common of which are stress, overuse, tight or strained muscles and bad posture. So it seems pretty simple doesn’t it, stress less, improve your posture and relieve tension in your jaw. How do you do that?

To live a little more stress free, try taking a few minutes out of each day to sit and breathe deeply. Doing this will relieve tension in your entire body, leaving the muscles in your jaw to relax and sit comfortably in a natural position.  To improve your posture, you need to make sure you sit up straight when your at the computer. Make sure your shoulders are back and your core muscles are switched on. This will make your big muscles do the job they are meant to, without putting undue stress on the smaller muscles that can’t handle it. Ultimately this will again relieve pressure and tension in your jaw, allowing it to function normally and stop popping

The final and most effective thing you can do to improve your jaw is to start doing TMJ exercises. There are stretches and strengthening exercises for your jaw. They will help relieve built up tension and stress in the tendons and muscles in your jaw. They’ll also build up the strength in the weaker muscles which will allow your jaw to assume a natural position. These are all very simple and easy things you can start doing right now to stop that jaw popping pain. Hopefully they work well and you won’t have to worry about that noise any longer.
