Acne is a common skin disease affecting 40-50 million Americans. When thinking of acne, we often think about teenage years, but since it is a disease partly caused by fluctuating hormones, it can appear at any time when a human being goes through some hormonal changes. Other possible reasons for acne are genetics, a high stress level and the type of the diet.
The human body secretes an oil called sebum to protect the hair and skin. When there is an excess of sebum, the skin pores become clogged and acne is formed. Acne can manifest itself in many ways from blackheads to cysts. Cysts are the most severe form of acne. They appear when the clogged pore becomes inflamed and the inflammation moves on deep into the skin.
Acne is not really harmful health-wise, but it causes a lot of mental pain and suffering, even depression. Therefore it makes sense to treat it as fast as possible before it leaves mental or physical scarring. One great way to get your acne in control is to take a look at what you eat. Many people think it is fat they should be avoiding if they want to keep their skin cleaner. Sebum is made of lipids (fats), but the fats you consume does not magically travel under your skin and start causing spots. In the scientific research acne has been associated with a diet high in carbohydrates and with milk. This is because both carbohydrates and milk have a direct effect on the hormones behind acne.
If you are after a more beautiful skin and becoming acne free, reduce the amount of carbohydrates you consume. The easiest way to start eating in a carbohydrate conscious way it is to avoid white flour, potatoes and sugar and add some natural fats on your diet. You will see the difference with your own eyes within a month or two after making the changes. Your skin will become cleaner and the skin color more even. On top of the skin improving effect, the low carbohydrate diet is also a great fat burning diet, so you might lose some extra weight too!
