Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Deformation and rupturing are two critical issues of breast enhancement. The traditional saline or silicone breast implant, while modern and advanced, is still risky. Recently, however, an alternative called gummy bear implants have been approved for use by the FDA. Officially known as a cohesive breast implant, this kind of implant holds its shape better, and is rupture and deformation resistant, because the silicone inside is cross linked. In fact, the nickname “gummy bear implants” is derived from the gummy bear candy, because an implant feels like the candy when cut open.

This means that the silicone is less liquid, and more like a thick gel, which should ideally be a better choice than traditional saline or silicone when it comes to keeping its integrity. For example, if a gummy bear implant is sliced in half, there will be no gross movement or spillage of the gel. Rather, the implant, along with the shell and the contents, will maintain its shape.

In addition, because the contents of the implant do not shift and move radically, no folding or rippling occurs. Breasts with traditional implants will usually display some sort of creases and folds that are visible on the skin. But with gummy bear implants, this is not a big problem.

But there are downsides to gummy bear implants’ advantages. Because the silicone is a thick gel, the implants look and feel more solid than traditional implants. Many critics of this implant describe the breasts like they are half cantaloupes bolted on to the chest. The natural bounce and movement of the breasts are not present, and while this is a problem for most breast enhancers, it is even more so for gummy bear implants.

And because they are more firm and solid, they cannot be inserted into the breast through the traditional means of using small incisions. Traditionally, implants are inserted through the areola, but this is not possible with gummy bear implants.

Advancements in technology, however, have resulted in newer and better ways of inserting implants into the body. A technique called transumbilical breast augmentation, or TUBA, makes the navel the entry point of the breast implant, allowing the scar to be hidden in a fold of the belly button. Unfortunately, this example of advanced breast implant insertion is only available for saline inflatable breast implants, wherein the shell of the implant is rolled up and guided to the chest. It is there that the shell is filled with saline to achieve the desired size.
