Get Rid of Those Acne Scars!

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

While it may be nice to finally be free from pimples and zits, its not enough to just get rid of acne. You want to get rid of all the bad memories from those days as well and how can you do that if you have the reminder staring you in the face each time you look in the mirror. I’m talking about those acne scars that are left behind even after the pimples are gone. If you really want to leave your acne in the past you will need some way to get rid of those.

Of course the best way to avoid acne scars is not to get them in the first place. Don’t pick or squeeze your pimples and make sure to take care to treat your acne as soon as it starts. Of course if I’m already too late for that then you will need to find some way to get rid of those scarring reminders.

The first thing you might want to try are the easy home remedies. If you don’t have much in the way of acne scars this may be sufficient for you and it certainly doesn’t hurt to try. Basic home substances such as lemon juice can be used as a cleanser and skin tightener. Rosehip oil and olive oil can be used to add vitamin E directly to the skin to help the healing process. Some people use an exfoliating facial mask of oatmeal and yogurt to help heal their skin. These basic home remedies can certainly help if you have minimal scarring, but if your scarring is worse then you will have to turn to medical fixes.

Laser treatments are a fairly new and increasingly popular way to get rid of acne scars. It is more expensive than the home remedies, but it is also much more effective in the majority of cases. There are a variety of laser skin treatments and the most well known is microdermabrasion, where the top layers of the skin are removed to help the new layers heal more evenly.

A second procedure that is popular and works well is chemical peels. These work similarly in that a chemical is placed on the skin with the purpose of “peeling” away the outer layers of the skin. Both methods can be used successfully to help heal and even remove acne scars. Talking to a trained cosmetic surgeon is the best way to determine which method will work for you.

Just as there are many ways to say goodbye to acne and the memory of it, there are also many ways to say goodbye to the damage left behind in the form of acne scars.

Ways to Deal with Acne

Monday, June 7th, 2010

There is no one overall treatment for acne that can be described as universally effective. But there are definitely mistakes to stay away from. Many people try to deal with the situation on their own. This can be hard because it may take proper medical attention to deal with severe acne. When it comes to how to get rid of your acne, there are many products on the market that can help, but the simple truth is that some of them don’t work. Or more accurately, they may work – but not for you. You may have more factors in play with your acne that you may not know about so proper research may be required.

Acne can have a number of causes, and this is why single treatments may not be effective. Some lotions or creams can actually make the situation worse if they dry out your skin. While you might think dry skin is more desirable than oily skin, it can actually lead to acne as well. Dry skin flakes and dead cells can actually combine with oil to clog your pores, so never choose a treatment that affects your skin in this way. It may take a process of trial and error, but eventually you will want to find a cream with minimal side effects in your efforts to stay acne free.

Over-washing is a common acne fighting mistake, and there are many others that are related to common myths that surround pimples. Some people love to pop their pimples, but this can make things worse. It can cause bacteria to spread across the face, and lead to scarring that lasts much longer than the acne itself. Proper acne treatment is all about moderation in terms of topical lotions, diet, and exercise. It’s never a good idea to do too much of one thing as this can lead to complications. If all else fails, ask you dermatologist for help in how to get rid of acne because they will have many great options at their disposal. With time and effort, you may be able to have clear skin that looks and feels great.

Acne Free Forever

Monday, April 26th, 2010

It is very difficult to get rid of acne. I spent most of my life with over 30% of my body covered in whiteheads, blackheads and cystic nodules. Growing up in the bay area of California there is a holistic approach to treating any ailment.  I spent hours in spas in Berkeley trying to get my skin acne free. When this failed to work, thousands of dollars later, I turned to a dermatologist. I was given tons of prescription pills and creams over the next five years. One of the more famous ones prescribed to me, it is also used for anti aging, Retin-A. Most of the drugs I was given had harsh side effects and were minimally affective while I was using them. Once I stopped taking the drug or using the cream my skin would go back to being covered in acne.  This was devastating to see small improvements and experience harsh side effects only to have my skin resort back to its old ways.

My brother’s case of acne was much worse then mine. Often acne is worse in men then it is in women because of the hormonal differences. He was prescribed a drug and within two months his skin was 90% better. I was amazed at how fast this improvement took place. After four months my brother’s skin had completely improved. He was given a drug called Accutane. At the time it hadn’t been on the market for very long and side effects were still coming into full view. Some of the sided effects were depression, birth defects and dizziness this list goes on and on into more obscure and terrible things.

Having my entire chest, back, neck and face covered in acne for ten years I did not care what the side effects were. I had to go to four different dermatologists to obtain a prescription. Doctors do not like to prescribe Accutane to females because of the risk of a pregnancy while taking Acctane. After taking this for 6 months my skin had cleared up 100%. When I stopped taking the drug my skin stayed cleared up. Two years later I started to get breakouts again. My skin was still 80% better than it was originally. I got another prescription for Accutane and took it for 3 months. That was a year ago and today my skin does not have one imperfection.
